As the filtration technology has advanced, the method has been improved from [single-layer filtration] using filtered sand to [two-layer filtration] using anthracite together. Furthermore, as a more advanced filtration method used for countermeasures against cryptosporidium and pretreatment for pure water production, there is a [three-layer filtration method] that uses garnet. Garnet is a reddish-brown silicate mineral with a high density of about 4, and is used as a finer particle size than filtered sand to demonstrate its power.

About garnet support material

Since garnet has a high density, if the same support material as filtered sand or anthracite (for example, filtered gravel No. 4 to 7) is used, the filtered gravel and garnet will be mixed [mixed bed state]. As a result, short circuits in raw water and uneven landing of the support floor may occur, making it difficult to achieve the expected filtration performance.
When using garnet as a filter material, we recommend that you use a high-density support material [supporting garnet] on the filtered gravel as a support floor directly underneath.
